Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or an information technology related field, and five years of current and progressive work experience in a medium to large sized, enterprise-level computing environment, as detailed below. Work experience must have included designing and recommending information technology solutions and management of staff or leadership of teams. Additional work experience as described may substitute for up to two years of the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Applicant's extensive data center and systems administrator work experience will provide the requisite in depth of knowledge, skills and abilities needed to join the Architecture team. For example: a working understanding of the following extensive subset of technologies and infrastructures: Storage Area Networks, Internet Protocol Networking, System Administration, Database Administration, Server Virtualization, Disaster Recovery, Backup and Recovery, Data Center Management and ITIL methodologies. Systems programming experience with z/OS, iSeries, PERL, HTML, UNIX, Windows, Linux, networks and databases are required.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•Broad technical experience in many of the technologies deployed in a modern data center.

•Demonstrated experience in the design/implementation of highly available server solutions, experience in the design/implementation of Highly Available server solutions distributed between two or more data centers is desirable.

•Experience in the design of business continuity solutions.

•Experience in designing/implementing server monitoring tools and/or solutions that can be used for capacity planning and uptime analysis.

•Extensive systems administration experience with one or more of the following Operating Systems: Windows, Linux, Solaris, AIX, z/OS.

•Ability to work with business and technical people in a collaborative design environment.

•Good understanding of Systems infrastructure architecture and Data Center operations.
•Understanding of how a customer or ITD business problem translates it into a technology solution.

•Experience researching highly technical subjects and writing white papers.

•Strong oral and written communication skills.

•Critical thinking and analysis skills needed to analyze data and reach conclusions.
•Strong interpersonal skills needed to build relations with vendors, customers and co-workers.
•Able to translate technical information in a non-technical business manner.


Job Description:
Summary of Work:

The Information Technology Dept. (ITD), located in Bismarck North Dakota, is a full service provider of IT services for State Government Agencies. This Architect position will assist fellow architects from across the organization to develop and maintain the architecture and strategy of an enterprise-wide information technology function. This position reports to the Computer Systems Division Director.

As a member of the Computer Systems Architecture group, this position will assist with planning strategic direction for all facets of IT infrastructure including but not limited to SAN design, n-Tier (multi-tier) server designs, business continuity solutions, capacity planning, extensive server virtualization and integration of all tiers of computing systems.

Primary responsibilities include designing the hosting infrastructure in ITD's two data centers, including Capacity Planning, Disaster Recovery Planning, Business Continuity Planning, design oversight for ITD's Storage infrastructure, Server Platforms, Server Virtualization and Operating Systems and Database and Web application infrastructures. Enterprise-wide architectural decisions are developed with ITD's Software, Security, and Network Architecture groups to assure that the state's IT infrastructure meets the needs of ITD's customers, is cost-effective and complies with ITD's Enterprise Architecture technology policies and standards. The position manages relationships with technical business partners to roadmap strategies with specific and/or general solution sets in the industry.

Individual will assist with determining the general impact of changes within the industry and specific impact to the State's architecture; communicate changes to entities affected; participate in establishing standards and policies related to the support and operations of the function; write and review requests for proposals and assist in proofs of concept for proposals and evaluations. Individual will participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, etc., to advise the management staff regarding technical and conceptual aspects; assist with providing oversight and guidance to the various entities that develop and maintain the infrastructure; review short-term and long-term user business and information technology plans; provide users with information to develop plans and advise of forthcoming technology; provide alternative uses of technology when feasible to ensure cost effectiveness and/or optimization of resources.
