Hopefully, you weren't the one suggesting such a thing, but even in our recent Ambassador survey there were a number of statements about encouraging more entertainment activities to draw potential North Dakotan's away from "big cities with lots of opportunities."

Certainly, we can't argue that big cities offer amble entertainment venues, but if you think about it, just about anywhere in North Dakota is a few hours away from every opportunity a big city can offer. We have active arts communities, dance troupes, symphonies, clubs, bands, book clubs, and just about every type of festival from harvest to sauerkraut. There isn't a Broadway show airing every night, but traveling Broadway shows visit our bigger communities on a regular basis. We have big name entertainers coming to venues across the state and prominent authors, artists and others of interest visiting often. There is rich history and heritage to be explored in our parks and tourist attractions. Our Tourism division lists 46 different categories of activities you can venture off to in the state, including some of the most diverse outdoor recreation opportunities you'll find anywhere. We even have cross country and downhill skiing opportunities, and for those who argue about big mountains, a 5-6 hour drive puts you on some of the best ski slopes in the U.S.

If you start to think about the opportunities to entertain yourself in North Dakota, you'll realize the activities suggested here are just the tip of that proverbial iceberg. It really is just too easy to overlook the opportunities that are right in our own backyard. Remember not to get so comfortable enjoying the great quality of life the state offers, that you forget to share and experience the opportunities that are close to home. Be a promoter of ALL there is to do and see in North Dakota in the coming year.

<atom:published xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom">Wed, 03 Dec 2008 00:00:00 GMT</atom:published>
ND Department of Commerece - Ambassadors

Glad I Came Home

As a teenager and young adult, I loved North Dakota because of the "room to roam" outdoors, ample recreational opportunities, and quality university system.

As a photographer, I never run out of breathtaking scenery, pristine nature, or entertaining people and events to photograph.

As a husband and father of two, I'm comforted by our state's clean air and water, safe cities, and honest & hard-working people.

My explorations of my home state have led me grinding my mountain bike down the Maah Daah Hey Trail, scuba diving with really big fish in Lake Sakakawea, hiking across the rugged prairie and Badlands to photograph wild horses, and trekking out under the night sky to witness dancing Northern Lights.

There are so many ways to enjoy North Dakota, it's hard to find time to enjoy them all.
