Brent Sanford, a 1994 UND accounting graduate, used to say he was the loneliest guy surrounded by two million people. As the chief financial officer for a large auto dealership in Denver, he spent too much time commuting and working to fulfill another man's legacy. In 2004, Brent and his wife, Sandra, decided to buy the family business and move home to Watford City.
Brent now employs seven people at his automobile dealership S and S Motors, Inc. He has attracted some of the best talent in the region by offering wages comparable to those in a much larger city. Sandra, a respiratory therapist, started a pulmonary unit at the local hospital and now serves clients throughout the region.
"Doing business in North Dakota is much more pleasurable than in a big city," Brent said. "In a small town, trust is at the heart of every transaction because, in all likelihood, the customer will turn out to be your best friend's cousin."
Brent is president of the local economic development board and a city alderman. He swears that, "There is more to do in western North Dakota than in Denver. And, best of all, there's more time to do it. You can just fit more into a day in North Dakota."
