"We believe people in rural communities need modern housing options with amenities so that is where we make our investments." |
Mike Marcil was CEO of a software company in Los Angeles when his wife, Trish Bothum, told him to quit his job and pursue real estate full-time. That risk resulted in their co-founding the Marcil Group Inc., a real estate operating company that has over $100 million in assets under their management in North Dakota.
Mike became an entrepreneur-in-residence at the UND Center for Innovation in 2005. He worked with students and other entrepreneurs to create the business plan for the Marcil Group. The company then purchased 250 rental-housing units and several commercial properties mostly in western North Dakota.
"With the energy boom, we saw a tremendous amount of opportunity but very little capital," says Mike. "We believe people in rural communities need modern housing options with amenities so that is where we make our investments."
In addition to his wife, Mike credits Gov. Hoeven for bringing his family back to North Dakota. "Gov. Hoeven hosted a dinner in California and encouraged us to invest in the state. Now we are leaving a legacy in North Dakota, impacting more people than we ever could have in California."
