North Dakota State University is seeking a visionary and accomplished leader to serve of the Executive Director of the Center for Computationally-Assisted Science and Technology [CCAST; referred to as “Center’]. Reporting to the Vice President for Research, the Executive Director is responsible for the oversight of CCAST as a service unit in support of high-performance and advanced research computing at the university and the North Dakota University System. Qualified candidates may be considered for tenured faculty position by the academic department corresponding to their background.
The responsibilities of the Executive Director include but not limited to:
• Providing strategic vision for the future of high-performance and advanced research computing
o Developing strategic growth and sustainability plan
o Evaluating the current state and assets of the Center in the context of a transition away from a grant funded unit to a centrally funded service unit
o Engaging all stakeholders to align the Center’s priorities with research and teaching activities as well as with the NDSU Strategic vision 2015-2020
o Developing new financial models for sustainable Center operation
o Developing and implementing long-range plans for the human and physical infrastructure of the Center to ensure services maintain relevancy to the needs of researchers
o Providing oversight of the Center and its operations
• Advancing the status of NDSU as a Research University/higher activity
o Working collaboratively with the Vice president for Research to align Center activities to NDSU research strengths
o Working collaboratively with academic units to grow and enrich scholarly activity
o Assisting faculty by providing technical and collaborative input on funding agency proposals
o Leading efforts for infrastructure and institution-level external funding opportunities
o Working collaboratively with NDSU IT and NDSU RTP to ensure continuity and appropriateness of services [i.e., HIPAA, FERPA, export control, security, data privacy, etc.]
o Developing performance/success metrics to track return on investment and progress
o Developing outreach [for internal and external audiences] and training programs to increase the level of advanced research computing competence
• Providing leadership to North Dakota University System initiatives focused on high-performance/advanced research computing
• Serving with integrity, transparency and impartiality
o Managing the daily operations of the Center
o Serving as a member of the RCA Leadership Council
o Developing an advisory panel of internal and external constituent to provide input on Center activities and direction

• Master’s Degree in a related field
• At least 5 years of experience in high-performance computing, including HPC systems administration and supervision of HPC professionals
• Significant budget and personnel management experience
• Demonstrated leadership in developing and supporting a HPC/advanced research computing governance structure, plans and initiatives
• Experience working with of relevant security, privacy, and acceptable use policies
• Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in high-performance computing, strategic computing direction, and system architecture, deployment, and operation.
• Experience working collaboratively across broad constituencies
• Ability to interact & collaborate effectively with a diversity of colleagues and students
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status
• PhD in a related field
• Academic credentials or a distinguished career in industry (e.g., a record of scholarly publication, attraction of internal or external funding, leadership in field expertise)
• Higher education experience with faculty rank for tenure or executive level industry experience
• Experience with federal laws in regards to security, privacy and acceptable use policies
• Experience working collaboratively with constituencies at the university, state, regional, national, and global levels
• Demonstrated leadership in developing large grant projects [external funding] related to HPC infrastructure
