This is a 12-month, tenure track position at the academic level of assistant professor, contingent upon meeting qualifications. The position is 90% research appointment with 10% teaching responsibility. The successful candidate will establish and lead an integrated and collaborative research program for control and management of invasive and noxious weeds in cropland. Travel to conduct research on native infestations through cooperation with local land managers will be important to limit the geographic spread of early invaders and unique weed targets. The person hired will solicit project funding from state and industry clientele and acquire competitive extramural funding from state, regional, and national agencies. The individual will disseminate information by preparing field research tours for clientele, publishing results in research reports and peer-reviewed journals, and presenting information at scientific conferences and to grower/commodity groups. The incumbent will work collaboratively and collegially with other scientists, Extension professionals, agronomists, producers, county weed boards, and stakeholders to identify needs and meet desired outcomes. The successful candidate will serve as the State Weed Control Officer to provide information for noxious weed legislation and serve as liaison to the county weed entities. The incumbent will be responsible for teaching one course offered one semester each year. The course will be directed at the undergraduate level but could be designed for dual career credit. Content is expected to include information on seed technologies and traits. The individual will participate in undergraduate advising and supervise graduate students’ academic and research programs. Other expectations include serving on committees at the Department, College, and University level and participating in appropriate professional societies.

• Ph.D. in weed science at time of appointment or Ph.D in related area with demonstrated experience in weed science
• Broad knowledge of herbicide use, weed control practices, weed identification taxonomy and ecology
• Demonstrated ability to generate and disseminate research results
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Collegial nature to interact with diverse audiences and clientele
• North Dakota Commercial Applicator License or ability to obtain
• Valid U.S. driver’s license or equivalent.
• Experience with invasive or noxious weed management
• Experience with biological control agents
• Farm background or land management activities
• Demonstrated ability to provide recommendations and guidelines for land managers, farmers, and crop advisors
• Experience supervising personnel
• Prior teaching or Extension experience or similar activity in industry with experience in multiple educational pedagogies applied appropriately for a given audience
• Grant writing experience.
