Job Description:
Position Description & Details:
The Community Forestry Specialist will work within the program goals and objectives set forth by the state Community Forestry (CF) program and Community Forestry Manager.  The CF Specialist is to assist local units of governments and communities in proper management of their community forests on a statewide basis. Responsibilities include involvement in conducting forest health surveys and long-term monitoring of impacted community forests to improve forest health and to slow the spread of invasive species and providing technical assistance to affected communities for tree removal and replacement to restore green infrastructure services, increase property values, conserve energy and mitigate wildland fire hazards. Duties will require coordination, policy interpretation and individual initiatives to resolve issues as they arise.  Specific areas of technical assistance provided to communities will include identification and management of insects and disease, tree species selection, community project planning, design and funding, tree planting, care and removal, and tree problem diagnostic assistance.

Responsibilities: 
Assist the Community Forestry Manager in establishing goals and objectives for the Community Forestry Program. Assist communities and volunteer groups in western and central ND with community forestry program needs assessment, planning and implementation. Provide technical assistance regarding planting, care, problem diagnosis and removal of community trees.  Assist the CF Manager in implementing a statewide CF challenge cost share program. Focus on providing exceptional service to internal and external customers through a professional and team driven environment.  Work safely.  

Work Schedule: 8-5 M-F

Advertised Salary: $45,827 + DOE

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
*Valid North Dakota Driver's License.
*Skills that demonstrate knowledge and expertise in leadership, community forestry management, natural resources management, or other related fields.
*Computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Office programs.
*The ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders.
*Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups and through various media.
*Ability to conduct oneself professionally, be self-directed in the work environment and work flexible and extended hours.
*Willingness and ability to travel alone, stay overnight and work in semi-rural areas.
*Willing to obtain International Society of Arboriculture Arborist Certification within first six months and/or when eligibility requirements are met.

Preferred Qualifications: 
*Recent work experience with community leaders and volunteer groups.
*Basic skills using forestry tools, including GIS software.
*Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and to manage time.
*Experience delivering community forestry programs.
